The Baseball Lifer

I share commentary and highlights from baseball and one college softball regional. Next week, I plan to discuss the super regionals in detail leading up to the softball World Series.

Kyle's book is out in audio and will be published in print on May 12, 2026. I chat with him about this baseball novel and his lifelong love of baseball, particularly the Seattle Mariners. Comments are welcome.

The Yankees' play-by-play man since 1989, Sterling passed away at age 87 on May 4, 2024. I added a few highlights of his along with most of the show I did upon his retirement in 2024.

Toni Akin grew up watching the Red Sox with her dad. While pursuing a career, she carved a niche in baseball for herself with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the prestigious Cape Cod League. We discuss what she does following my usual commentary on recent events in baseball.

Jack makes his second appearance on the program to talk about coaching and tutoring such players as David Wright. He also answers my questions about who does or doesn't get drafted to play pro ball.

Greg Johnson has worked as a trainer in baseball and football as well as elevating sports medicine in golf to a new level. We talk about his book "From the Dugout and the 19th Hole" as well as the increasing injuries in modern sports.

I present commentary and highlights from the recent World Baseball Classic, won in an upset by team Venezuela.

After some early commentary about other moves in baseball, most of the show contains profiles of Carlos Beltran and Andruw Jones, both of whom recently were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I consider this my favorite of all episodes I've produced for this series. After my first visit to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, I interviewed its former president, Jeff Idelson for this program. Since then, I've re-broadcast this show at the end of each year. Happy New Year, friends.

I begin this show with a few words about current baseball events. Then, I present Jean Shepherd's 1964 recording about his summer broadcasting the AAA Toledo Mudhens and his life as a baseball fan. Enjoy, and Merry Christmas to all.
